Eskil Mattsson during field research in Sri Lanka

Focali theme leader PhD Eskil Mattsson interviewed in article by SciDev.Net

Focalis theme leader PhD Eskil Mattsson has been interviewed by SciDev.Net (Science and Development Network) about his research in Sri Lanka. The article raises challenges for Sri Lanka to implement REDD+. One challenge being lack of data on forest resources and deforestation rates needed to establish reference levels for carbon emissions.

A challenge for local livelihoods identified by Eskil Mattsson through his PhD research was brought up in the SciDev.Net article: “Currently, over 85 per cent of forest clearing is for small-scale, rain-fed farming. ´Nearly 80 per cent of people living in these areas depend on this type of agriculture for subsistence,´ Mattson told SciDev.Net. As a result, a major share of potential emission reductions will come at the expense of small and seasonal farmers, raising livelihood concerns, he observed.”
