Javier Godar interviewed on global re-greening by Swedish television SVT

In the interview Godar comments on the article “Recent reversal in loss of global terrestrial biomass” recently published in the journal Nature Climate Change (NCC).

The NCC article shows that despite a continuing deforestation of rainforest the global terrestrial biomass has slightly increased since 2003. ABC (aboveground biomass carbon) was measured in the worldwide study through satellite data. The global increase in biomass is partly attributed to re-greening of savannas and reforestation activities in China.

In the SVT article "Jorden blir grönare" the Focali researcher Javier Godar comments on this seemingly positive news by not only focusing on the quantity but the quality of the vegetation:

- Deforestation of tropical rainforest has decreased in the Brazilian Amazon, but it´s still extensive in Indonesia and Africa. In Borneo there is for example not much rainforest left at all. The risk with “good news”, saying that total global vegetation is increasing, is that tropical rainforests are reduced to carbon sinks. However they are much more than that, they contain more species than all other nature types in the world, they play a fundamental role in water cycles and the earth’s climate regulation systems and they encompass several indigenous peoples and their cultures.

- One hectare logged rainforest cannot be compensated by one hectare of forest plantation in China or elsewhere.
