New brief from AgriFoSe2030 on gender issues in research on agriculture for food security

Agriculture in low- and middle-income countries face considerable challenges with rapidly evolving complexity. Although opportunities for agricultural research to succeed in addressing the issues are significant, one major barrier is the low level of gender equity. This brings challenges across entire crop and livestock value chains, all the way to landscape management.

This new brief from AgriFoSe2030 identifies knowledge gaps and opportunities for research on gender issues in four key areas of agricultural development and food security. Focali researchers Lisa Westholm, SLU, and Madelene Ostwald, Chalmers (and leader of AgriFoSe2030 theme 2: multifunctional landscapes for increased food security), emphasizes that multifunctional landscapes provide opportunities for women to play a central role in food production, despite limited access to land, labor and capital. However, the produce of multifunctional landscapes risk being disregarded in decisions related to land use or management, and policy-makers thus need to be aware of customary organization that influences access to, and decision-making about, these products.

The AgriFoSe2030 programme targets the SDG 2 - "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture" in low-income countries, by synthesizing and translating science into policy and practice. The programme is developed by a consortium of scientists from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Lund University, University of Gothenburg and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
