Two Doors in Participatory Research in the Colombian Amazon: Multi-Stakeholder Engagement and Indigenous Knowledge

  • Via Zoom and at Stockholm Resilience Centre Stockholm Sweden (map)

Carlos Alberto Hernandez Velez in the multiethnic House of Traditional Knowledge (Ipanoré) in Vaupes department, Colombian Amazon region.

Warmly welcome to a seminar focused on the vital practice of Weaving Knowledges (WK), a concept recognized both in ancient indigenous practices and in contemporary international discussions. This seminar offers an opportunity to delve into the need, willingness, and pathways to develop dialogues between diverse actors and knowledge systems. Early career researchers and Focali members Carlos Vélez and Jesica López at Lund University are invited as guest speakers in the seminar by Focali members at Stockholm Resilience Centre.

Drawing upon their backgrounds as conservation and sustainability researchers from Colombia the guest speakers Carlos and Jesica are advancing research that employs participatory methodologies to bridge diverse actors within the Amazon region. Their aim is to fortify Knowledge Weaving networks, a process locally recognized as Dialogos de Saberes, through the strategic integration of system thinking, participatory tools, and Participatory Action Research approaches seen from the lenses of their own research. They will present their research and experiences and invite interested to join a conversation focusing on the urgent need for bridging actors, institutions, and processes with a particular focus on learning between knowledge systems.

This seminar provides a valuable opportunity to connect “Weaving Knowledges” researchers, contribute to international and national platforms addressing WK, and advance the understanding of how to sustain and give more depth and coherence to WK processes. The invited speakers believe that by weaving together diverse forms of knowledge, we can better address pressing global issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change and inequality.

The seminar will be followed by a continued conversation with researchers from Stockholm Resilience Centre and other actors working with bridging and weaving of knowledge systems. Welcome to join the seminar and conversation to learn, share and explore interests to collaborate ahead.

Carlos Alberto Hernandez Vélez, Currently on the third year of his PhD, Carlos is currently developing participatory research with Indigenous Knowledges for Forest Fauna management in the Colombian amazon, at the Lund Center for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS). Carlos is interested in the transdisciplinary approach to knowledge integration in socioecological systems with career experiences ranging from entomology, ecology, participatory action research, indigenous research methodologies and decolonial processes. His interests include critical development of transcendental knowledges for inner -outer transformations, with experience as self-development therapist, meditation practices, Amerindian philosophies and the ritual use of sacred plants.
Check out his personal webpage and youtube channel.

On their way to colead a fauna workshop in Tipisca community, Carlos took a picture with local friends and research team from Airumakuchi indigenous hunter association (Edilberto Del Aguila and Milton Pinto) and local Tikuna artist (Luz Adiela Lopez Ahue), while navigating the Loretoyacu river in the Colombian Amazon region. See additional image at the top of the page of a multiethnic House of Traditional Knowledge.

Jesica López is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC) at Lund University with expertise in Systems thinking and participatory mapping approaches to address complex problems at the intersection of environmental, socio-economic, and technological dimensions of global challenges.  In 2024, she completed her PhD Thesis in Environmental Science at the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC) and Agenda 2030 Graduate School at Lund University. Her research interests are focused on our understanding of socioecological systems, sustainable land use, food-systems and biodiversity conservation for more sustainable futures. In her research Jesica has used multistakeholder dialogues with a broad range of actors in the Amazon.
