Forests, climate and livelihoods are interconnected

Forests can play a vital part for both climate- and poverty issues; in reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases and as a source of income for poor people that depend on the forest for their livelihood.

Multifunctional landscapes

Multifunctional landscapes

Many Focali researchers focus on synergies and trade-offs between different land-uses in the landscape, such as interactions between forests and agriculture

Welcome to Focali

Focali (Forest, Climate, and Livelihood research network) is a Swedish research network focusing on forest / bio-energy, climate change and poverty issues. Several Swedish universities and institutions are represented in the network. The purpose is to contribute to the provision of relevant knowledge to Sida and other Swedish authorities for the effective use of forest operations to achieve climate-poverty targets. Focali also aims to increase the flow of relevant information between scientists, industry, government and civil society.

“Georgetown ain’t got a tree. We got the trees” - Amerindian Power & Participation in Guyana’s LCDS

New paper co-authored by Sam Airey and Focali member Torsten Krause, examines to which extent the indigenous population of Guyana is included within the Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). This single site case study concludes that significant adjustments are needed, e.g. more contextualised governance and decentralising power.

Trees, forests and water: Cool insights for a hot world

Trees, forests and water: Cool insights for a hot world

New paper from Focali members Aida Bargués Tobella and Ulrik Ilstedt together with 20 other authors from different universities, organisations and institutes; e.g. ICRAF, CIFOR, CIRAD and FAO. In this review they study the tree-climate relationships. The authors suggest that the direct effects via rainfall and cooling may be more important than the well-studied effects through the global carbon balance.

Whose Reality Counts? Critical Junctures in Livelihood Trajectories Under Deforestation

Whose Reality Counts? Critical Junctures in Livelihood Trajectories Under Deforestation

New article by Focali member Robin Biddulph and colleague Pelle Amberntsson published in Journal of Economic and Social Geography on livelihood trajectories and deforestation. This study examines livelihood trajectories over two decades in a village affected by deforestation in Northeast Cambodia. The objective was to use quantitative and qualitative methods to identify critical junctures structuring those trajectories. The junctures suggest an analytical framework for understanding deforestation-livelihoods dynamics in other contexts, which can disrupt narrative simplifications associated with community forestry.
